Who we are
Sound Payroll Compliance was established to address a recurring gap in payroll operations that often appears as organizations grow, expand across jurisdictions or transition payroll systems. While payroll platforms and internal teams handle routine processing effectively, compliance issues frequently arise outside standard workflows, particularly during multi-state expansion, system changes, filing corrections or agency correspondence. These matters are often left unresolved because they fall outside the scope of payroll processors.
Sound Payroll Compliance exists to provide structured, project-based support for these situations.
What we do
Sound Payroll Compliance provides payroll compliance advisory services for businesses and accounting professionals managing complex payroll environments across multiple U.S. states, with experience supporting Canadian payroll environments when required. Our work focuses on issues that sit between payroll processing, accounting and tax agencies, including multi-state payroll setup and registration, payroll tax notice resolution, payroll system transition and filing adjustments and payroll compliance and risk review.
We work directly with federal and state tax agencies, including the IRS, when appropriate, and coordinate closely with internal teams and accounting professionals to resolve defined compliance matters. We do not provide ongoing payroll processing; engagements are designed to correct issues, document resolution and strengthen payroll systems for long-term stability.
Leadership
Sound Payroll Compliance is led by Managing Principal Nicole Currier, CPP, who has worked in payroll and payroll tax compliance since 2002.
Nicole previously served as Manager of Tax and Compliance at WURK, where she led a team of 20 professionals supporting nearly 1,000 clients across complex, multi-state payroll environments. Her experience includes oversight of payroll tax compliance for local government entities, including police, fire, court and municipal operations, union environments and large healthcare organizations.
Throughout her career, she identified a recurring operational gap: when payroll issues fall outside standard processing cycles or system limitations, responsibility becomes unclear and structured resolution support is limited.
Sound Payroll Compliance was established to address that gap directly, providing defined-scope, project-based compliance resolution for businesses and accounting professionals navigating multi-state payroll complexity.
Our approach
Our work is guided by clearly defined scope, resolution-focused timelines and thorough documentation that supports long-term compliance. We collaborate closely with accounting professionals when appropriate and focus on providing clarity without creating ongoing dependency.
